GERMAN FOOTBALL FACE ROW REGARDING GOALKEEPING POSITION
Bayern Munich chief UliHoeness has threatened the German FA that the club could refuse to release players for international call-up due to the goalkeeping row. Barcelona stopper Marc Andre TerStegen caused a stir last month suggesting that he deserves a shot at the number one position.
There has been this consensus in Germany that current number one Manuel Neuer is old and past it. Neuer has suffered a series of injuries in the past few seasons and has not looked like the stopper who was universally regarded as the best stopper. He also has excellent footwork and is a good one on one stopper.
TerStegen has continued to increase in ability with the German regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Hoeness revealed that if the German FA does not support Neuer it could lead to the club refusing to release players for international friendlies.
The German FA and Bayern Munich have had a testing relationship that started last season when manager Joachim Low read a list of players that are not up for consideration for the national team.
Several Bayern Munich players made the list including Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng, and Mats Hummels.
This had caused friction as some of the players spoke out about the way the process was handled. MesutOzil also had issues with the FA regarding alleged racist tendencies for the FA Chief which caused a stir.
German football needs to pick itself up as Low is currently in the midst of rebuilding ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament. The goalkeeper row is one that they would be looking to put beyond them and focus on the task at hand.
It remains to be seen whether Joachim Low will stick to Neuer or give TerStegen the number one shirt for the national team.
